Fitbit shuts down Pebble smartwatch after the takeover

On December 6, Fitbit completed the acquisition of the famous e-ink smartwatch developer. However, the outcomes of the $40 million merger (the figure coming from insiders, actual sum not revealed by the parties) do not sound very optimistic.

While Fitbit is planning to keep the development team which is 40% of Pebble’s staff, it dismisses the rest with severance package. All patents and other intellectual property including the new Pebble OS software are too to pass into possession of the fitness trackers manufacturer.

In addition, the acquirer shuts down the production of smartwatch and recalls the anticipated Time 2 and Core. The company promised to return the money for preorders at Kickstarter in a couple of months.

Fitbit also stops customer support for Pebble smartwatch owners. Instead, now they are advised to use the customer network on the company’s website for self-service.

Overall, Fitbit seems to have acquired the most valuable company’s assets, leaving unwanted services and staff overboard. All of this at a comparatively modest price:  it was only recently when Citizen offered Pebble $740 million for a similar bargain.
