December started with numerous complaints from Belarus about blocking of the popular anonymous browser. Subscribers of Velcom and Atlant Telecom providers were among the first to encounter the problem. It turned out that TOR proxy addresses were put on the to-be-blocked list by the State Commission for Telecommunication in order to limit access to the region-restricted websites. The shutdown was not complete though, since many users still have access to the server. Yet, the statistics on the official website shows that direct connection from Belarus decreased by 2000 users over 24 hours, while indirect connection increased by 1500.
It’s been a year since Belarus banned TOR and similar anonymizers. It cost the country 1 million Belarusian rubles to create software that would detect services providing anonymous Internet-access. However, for a long time TOR, the most popular among them, remained intact.
